A 35-year-old man was shot and killed for his cellphone in full view of his girlfriend.
Nkosinathi Zaca was walking home from work with his girlfriend on Wednesday night in Mkhondeni, Pietermaritzburg, when an armed gang confronted them.
Police spokesman Joey Jeevan said the deceased and the girlfriend were forced to lie down while the gang searched them and took their cellphones.
"The suspects were about to flee the scene when Zaca apparently tried to tackle one of his assailants, who turned around and shot him twice, seriously wounding him.
"He died shortly after being taken to hospital," Jeevan said.
She said the girlfriend was left unharmed.
No arrests have been made and a case of murder and armed robbery has been opened.
