Bushbuckridge mayor Milton Morema kept his promise when he handed over clothing and food parcels to 48 orphans whose parents died in a road accident involving two trucks on November 12.
The event in Mpumalanga was attended by members of the affected families and senior officials of the provincial department of roads and transport. The ceremony was held at the municipality chambers yesterday.
Morema said what happened in Bushbuckridge on that fateful day would not be forgotten because the road accident left orphans who needed to be cared for.
"These orphans are receiving clothes for Christmas so they may know that the government cares," said Morema.
He urged the community, especially businesses, to assist the relatives of the affected families.
"These children have to be educated because our ANC president Jacob Zuma does not want street kids," he said.
"It is our duty as the government to make sure that they get that education.
"I'm going to make sure that the children also receive school uniforms for next year," Morema said.
He said the people who died in the accident were not travelling to a game of dice or shebeens to drink liquor, but were on their way to work for their children.
Morema handed out food parcels worth R860 each to 22 families.
The head of the provincial department of roads and transport, Mathabatha Mokonyama, represented MEC Jackson Mthembu.
Mokonyama said the MEC could not be at the event as he had to attend to other equally important, government business.
One of the survivors of the horror crash, Tshepo Malelo, told Sowetan he was discharged from Witbank Hospital on Wednesday last week.
Twenty-five people died in the accident after a truck in which they were travelling collided with another truck.
