'Buses best in world'

Allan Reddy, chief executive and chairman of SA Roadlink, is a self-made businessman.

He started selling fruit and vegetables when he was 14 and in Standard 7 because his dad had died.

Reddy had no option but to make a plan for his future.

So he built his fruit and veg business into a significant operation with five vehicles and a string of supermarkets where he sold the produce.

And then, in 2002, he went into a completely different line with the formation of SA Roadlink.

But even that was not enough for him. He started developing a chain of hotels.

He has two in the group, and the third one is being built in Midrand opposite Gallagher Estate.

However, he intends opening nine other hotels on a similar pattern throughout the country.

Last year, he was a finalist in the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year competition - Emerging Entrepreneur category.

He also wanted to buy 1time airlines but the deal did not work out at the last minute.

By most accounts, Roadlink coaches are said to be pretty smart. In an interview with Moneyweb Reddy said: "They are very upmarket.

"In fact, they're the best in the world."
