A youth festival to celebrate the enormous talent of the artist Gerard Sekoto will be staged at the Johannesburg Art Gallery, in Joubert Park, tomorrow.

The yearly festival will feature activities such as drama, poetry, clay modelling, film, a puppet show and a young artists' conference. Activities run from 10am until 4pm.

Since it was launched in 1993 many young artists have taken part in the programme.

Experienced curators will be sharing the knowledge of the industry with up-and-coming artists.

Sekoto was one the country's most respected artists.

He was born in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, in 1913. He studied to be a teacher and spent four years teaching at a local school, Khaiso Secondary.

In 1938 he left to live with relatives in Sophiatown, where his passion for painting began.

In 1947 he moved to Paris and continued there with his art. He died in France in 1993.
