The Gauteng provincial government has started preparing for life after the 2010 World Cup, the quadrennial money-spinning tournament.
As a result, the department of sports, arts, culture and recreation has commissioned a study on the development of a post-World Cup strategy for Gauteng.
Barbara Creecy, MEC for sports, arts, culture and recreation, said the feasibility study will assist Gauteng to plan for bidding and hosting major events beyond 2010.
"This strategy will seek to support the province's Globally Competitive City Region and Growth and Development, and Competitive Sport Strategies.
"With the region's preparations for the World Cup moving smoothly and on schedule the Gauteng Government and its major urban centres of Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni, are now planning to look beyond the World Cup to ensure that the region benefits fully from its hosting of the world's second largest sporting event."
Gauteng will play a major role for the Confederations Cup next year and World Cup the following year by hosting the opening and closing ceremonies for both.
Ellis Park with host the Confederations Cup ceremonies while Soccer City will take care of the World Cup.
In addition, the headquarters for Fifa during the two competitions will be in Sandton while the OR Tambo International Airport will be the main entry point for the teams, officials and supporters.
Creecy added: "Others may see the World Cup as the culmination of their sporting dream. Gauteng believes that hosting this great event is the beginning of a new era for sport in the region.
"It is for this reason that we are determined to ensure that we are fully prepared to capitalise on our achievements in 2010. That's why we have commissioned this study now."
