A needless bloodbath

As the festive season begins in earnest today, general concerns about road safety will rise correspondingly with the deluge of long-haul traffic on our national roads.

As the festive season begins in earnest today, general concerns about road safety will rise correspondingly with the deluge of long-haul traffic on our national roads.

These fears are not misplaced, given the usual increase in the death toll associated with hazardous conditions resulting from peak traffic around this time.

The busiest holiday period, December, unfailingly ushers in bloody carnage on our roads. Consequently some family reunions in far-flung areas are in danger of being tinged with melancholy as kin fail to arrive.

Yet this bloodbath is as needless as the factors that cause it - such as reckless driving, fatigue, unroadworthy vehicles, speeding and road rage.

Just this weekend six people were killed when the driver of a minibus taxi lost control of his vehicle near Izingolweni in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Inkatha Freedom Party has called on law enforcement agencies to increase visibility on the roads.

Citing reports that more than 91 000 motorists do not have legal driver's licences, the party says it is a fact that many road deaths in our country are caused by illegal drivers.

We pray that greater sense prevails on our roads and that motorists heed the advice that it is better to arrive late at their destination - than not at all.
