The police yesterday vowed to hunt down vigilantes operating at will in Durban's Umlazi township.

This is after the killing of two women, Thandi Hlophe and her sister Danisile Ngcobo, on Monday night.

The two were dragged out of a night vigil, repeatedly stabbed and then set alight.

Spokesperson Superintendent Daniela Veldhuizen said the sisters were attending a relative's night vigil in Umlazi's E section.

"They were stabbed and then burnt to death by a mob of vigilantes and the motive for their murder is unknown at this stage," Veldhuizen said.

On Saturday two men were killed in the same section.

One was shot in the right thigh and bled to death.

His companion was stabbed and then shot.

Both died on the scene and it was not known why they were attacked.

Police were unable to confirm whether the two cases were linked.

"We have arrested one man in connection with Saturday's crime, but there have been no arrests in connection with the death of the two sisters," Veldhuizen said.

The names of the dead men have not been released.

Several other cases of suspected criminals being stoned and stabbed to death have been reported to the Umlazi police station.

Two months ago a 23-year-old man tried to rob a woman of her handbag.

He was chased, caught and stoned to death by an angry mob.

The police have repeatedly warned that such acts are totally unlawful.
