The police crime intelligence unit has pounced on two men accused of defrauding the presidency in Pretoria.

There was a surge in commercial crime and fraud, especially identity theft, the unit had told Sowetan .

The two, aged 40 and 36, were arrested on Tuesday under operation "Swift".

They will appear in the Pretoria magistrate's court soon.

Unit spokesman Senior Superintendent Tummi Golding said one man was arrested at his home in Centurion and the other in Ramokokastad, North West.

"They are alleged to have used stolen identities to transfer unspecified large amounts of money from the presidency, as well as buying a luxury German sedan and a motor bike," said Golding.

Assets valued at R400000 were seized.
