ANC selling out the poor

It is sad that police used rubber bullets against the poor residents of Macambini, which is not far from Chief Albert Luthuli's museum and grave.

What disturbs me is not whether the development the residents were protesting against should go ahead or not, but whether sufficient consideration was given to the project.

Has there been a "buy-in" from the people? Using 16000ha and Ruwaad's claim that it will be Africa's largest shopping centre makes no sense.

Ruwaad's shareholders are two brothers from Pakistan who made their money in the signage business.

Dubai has serious human rights issues in its construction industry. Human Rights Watch wrote an article "Building Towers, Cheating Workers".

Why the ANC is so passionate about a project that will displace the poor to make way for the super rich beats me.

The north coast has plenty of privately owned land, so why isn't the ANC expropriating the Mondi forest next door?

Chopping trees is far easier than firing rubber bullets. Pity the ANC Youth League does not show such passion about the Aids pandemic or lack of health facilities and manpower in our government hospitals.

As a kid my family was moved because of the Group Areas Act to Vrededorp in Johannesburg. To give the people of Macambini that kind of grief is not what I thought the ANC stood for.
