The Emfuleni municipality has set aside R7,8million for the immediate rehabilitation of the sewage-contaminated Vaal River.

Mayor Assistance Mshudulu said yesterday that all pump stations were undergoing "serious maintenance".

Mshudulu assured Vaal residents that the recent spillage into the river had been prioritised and the municipality had reacted rapidly.

"We have experienced some of the worst spillages into the Vaal River and Sharpeville Dam, caused by heavy rains. Most of the spillage occurred as a result of damage that affected some pump stations," said Mshudulu.

He said another factor was the pressure being put on infrastructure as it did not develop at the same rate as economic and population growth in the Vaal.

He added that this year alone the municipality had spent R50million in rehabilitating the Leeuwkuil and Rietspruit sewer works.
