More than 1500 motorists have been arrested for various offences since the start of the December holidays, the KwaZulu-Natal department of transport said.

The breakdown of the offences is as follows: 104 motorists were arrested for drunk driving, eight for speeding and 743 were charged after being caught on camera for breaking road rules.

And 362 were caught for driving without a licence, 227 were charged for not wearing seat belts and seven for inconsiderate driving.

The road traffic inspectorate said under the Thathiskorokoro Operation, a total of 156 vehicles had been suspended for being unroadworthy. This includes 35 buses, 22 taxis and eight metered taxis that were impounded.

Department of transport, community safety and liaison spokesman Nonkuleko Mbatha said the province would ensure that all road users adhere to the road rules.

"We hope that when we get to the busy days of the festive season people will have understood that there will be no mercy for those breaking the law," Mbatha said.

"This is just a pre-holiday clear-up of our roads. People who do not respect road rules are the major contributors to road carnage.

"It's important to warn people that they should not drive after drinking."
