A 15-year-old girl put up a brave fight at the weekend in a struggle with her would-be rapist - ending with her biting off part of his tongue.
Police said that the girl, from the Makhambane area near Mtubatuba, northern KwaZulu-Natal, was accosted by a man she knew. He dragged her into the bushes and tried to rape her.
"He started by trying to kiss her and that's when she bit his tongue to make him stop," said police spokesman Captain Jabulani Mdletshe
But the would-be rapist continued and tried to pull off her panties. When he again tried to kiss her she succeeded in biting off part of his tongue.
"Her attacker has now been arrested and is expected to appear in the KwaMsane magistrate's court this week, said Mdletshe.
In a separate incident, KwaMsane police have launched a manhunt for a man who, it is claimed, raped his brother's girlfriend at the weekend.
Mdletshe said a 33-year-old woman was asleep in her cottage when she heard a knock on the door on Saturday night.
The woman opened the door after the suspect had introduced himself as her boyfriend's younger brother, whom she knew very well.
"The two (the woman and the younger brother) had previously quarrelled after the older brother had declared his love for her," Mdletshe said.
"On the day of the attack he is alleged to have told her he wanted to apologise for causing the fight between them. The woman opened the door and let him in."
Once inside he apologised but moments later allegedly said he was feeling hot and took off his T-shirt. The woman was only wrapped in a bath towel because of the heat.
She claims he grabbed her and raped her before fleeing. She notified the neighbours who called the police. But the suspect is still at large.
Mdletshe said he was optimistic that the man would be caught soon since he was well known in the area.
