Remarks unfair to SAPS

The South African Police Union (Sapu) would like to condemn the generalised statements made by politicians about corruption in the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The South African Police Union (Sapu) would like to condemn the generalised statements made by politicians about corruption in the South African Police Service (SAPS).

We have taken note of the statements that make it seem as if the service is full of corrupt officers.

As much as we acknowledge that there are few rotten elements, the majority of men and women in blue are committed and dedicated officers who have taken it on themselves to create a crime-free society.

These patriotic sons and daughters have chosen to put their lives on the line so that ordinary South Africans can enjoy freedom.

So it is totally unacceptable for politicians to make generalised statements that demoralise these officers.

In any case there are mechanisms within the SAPS that deal effectively with corruption. The few rotten elements must be exposed. We cannot allow them to spoil the good name of our members.

There is no room for corruption in the police. Despite the police being the lowest paid in the entire public service there is absolutely no justification for corruption because even the lack of jobs is no excuse for criminals to brutalise our communities.

Oscar Skommere, Sapu acting general secretary, Pretoria
