New Safety and Security Minister Nathi Mthethwa has spoken out strongly against incompetence and corruption in the police department.

Opening a new police station in Sharpeville on Friday, Mthethwa said: "Incompetent police are not wanted at our police stations.

"I urge those corrupt officials to leave the service. Corruption and crime are not going to be tolerated in our department."

He said the government understood that the police worked under unsatisfactory conditions - but that did not excuse corruption or incompetence.

"We are trying to boost the morale of our employees. We have established wellness programmes to assist our men and women in blue.

"In some instances allegations against our members are baseless."

The opening of the police station was attended by Gauteng MEC for community safety Firoz Cachalia, provincial Commissioner Perumal Naidoo, Emfuleni mayor Assistance Mshudulu and senior police officers.
