This is Ubuntu

Anybody dedicated to uplifting the community deserves kudos.

Anybody dedicated to uplifting the community deserves kudos.

This is exactly what Mary Khikhe Mhlanga did nearly 20 years ago when she started a creche under a tree at a rural village in Mpumalanga.

Armed with a Junior Certificate, she was initially the only teacher as the kindergarten evolved into a school.

It was her time and money and a selfless attitude that built a better community.

She has also plucked from the list of those unemployed 86 local women who make bricks to distribute to villagers.

It's a telling blow against South Africa's housing shortage - especially among the poor.

For her lessons on Ubuntu she won the Sowetan 2008 Community Builder of the Year.

Re a leboga Mma Mhlanga.
