Springbok sevens coach Paul Treu on Saturday lauded his team for their "massive effort".

Treu said this after his side won the home leg of the IRB Sevens Series for the first time by beating new Zealand 12-7 in the final at Outeniqua Park in George.

It was also the very first time that South Africa had won two consecutive tournaments, the win at George coming on the heels of the final victory over England in Dubai last week.

"All credit to the guys. We kept our heads in the past two tournaments, and although we made some mistakes in the first half against New Zealand the guys put matters right after half time," Treu said on Saturday night.

Throngs of people from the 20 000 crowd queued after the match to get photographed with the coach and his players - or just to get an autograph.

The former Springbok sevens captain, who has taken the Boks sevens to new heights, agreed that the Springboks' defence rattled their most important adversaries in the two tournaments to date and also that the rucks played a big part in the two title wins in Dubai last weekend and George on Saturday.

"But that was not a practised thing," he said. "We spent very little time on our rucking. I think the hunger of the guys to win the ball, to win the match, made us this competitive at the breakdown." - Sapa
