Lassy Chiwayo, mayor of the Mpumalanga capital, Nelspruit, has pledged R500000 towards the staging of the Mayoral Cup, which kicks off on Saturday.
Sabelo Zulu, one of the tournament organisers said their main aim is "the development of soccer for both boys and girls".
"Also, as one of the 2010 World Cup host cities, this tournament will also serve to prepare the people of the province for the big event," Zulu said.
Among the sporting codes that teams will take part in are soccer, netball and wheelchair basketball.
This year's event, especially soccer, will be open to teams that are not affiliated to any local football association. - Richard Nkosi
