The rocky marriage of legendary soccer star "Midnight Express" Helman Mkhalele has finally crumbled.
Sowetan can reveal that the former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana player has been slapped with a divorce writ by his wife Bridget.
The Mkhaleles have been at each other's throats for more than a year now, with reports that although they still live under one roof they sleep in separate rooms.
The papers were processed at the Johannesburg divorce court on July 25 but were only served on the soccer legend on August 3. The couple kept their impending split a secret but the marriage had deteriorated further.
Sowetan can also reveal that Bridget will demand half of their joint estate and custody of their two children. She will also demand a once-off relocation fee and that Mkhalele pay R1500 towards the maintenance of each child.
Bridget spoke exclusively to Sowetan yesterday.
"This will affect our children. I know this because I grew up without parents. It will hurt them but at the end of the day they will have to understand."
She dismissed talk that the marriage took a knock after Mkhalele lost money in a furniture shop venture.
"Distance played a role. He was in Turkey from 1997 until 2005. Even when he was home we hardly got to see him," she said.
"No one likes to see their children suffering but if things are not working you can't force it. You don't want them to witness any animosity," she said.
Mkhalele worked as Jomo Sono's assistant coach on his return from Turkey. He earned 66 caps with Bafana Bafana and scored eight goals.
