Sowetan to the rescue

At last Gaopalelwe Mohadi is a registered citizen of South Africa, thanks to Sowetan.

At last Gaopalelwe Mohadi is a registered citizen of South Africa, thanks to Sowetan.

The 21-year-old from Meadowlands, Soweto, has finally received her identity document from Home Affairs after a two-year wait.

Sowetan published Mohadi's story on how she could not register at university this year because she did not have an ID. Mohadi feared the same was going to happen next year. That was until Sowetan intervened.

"I am very happy and thankful to Sowetan," she said. "I had lost hope of ever getting an ID. I could not believe it when my mother, Mildred, told me that an official from Home Affairs had phoned to give her my ID number.

"He told her it would be ready within a week. My mother collected it because I was away."

Mohadi had applied for an ID in 2006 but her application was rejected. - Zinhle Mapumulo
