More than "1000 electoral presiding officers" in some parts of KwaZulu-Natal are at loggerheads with the independent electoral commission over delays in being paid.
The presiding officers and their staff were contracted by the IEC during the countrywide voter registration last month.
They claim that the IEC not only delayed their payments but had also paid them less than they were promised.
"Our forms indicated that presiding officers would be paid R820 for two day's work. Instead we were only given R685," one officer said.
Sowetan was inundated with calls from concerned people who complained about nonpayment.
They said in previous years, the IEC used to pay them on time by cheque.
"This year we were told that we were to be paid electronically," another contracted officer said.
Thembeka Mthombeni said: "At least someone from the provincial office should communicate with us.
"The district managers claim they know nothing. We heard people in other provinces were paid on time."
Provincial electoral officer Mawethu Mosery acknowledged the delays in paying some of the staff.
"We apologise for the inconvenience to our staff. We opted to use the Electronic Fund Transfer system rather than issuing cheques. We are complying with the act of handling public funds," he said.
