The KwaZulu-Natal government has promised to pay for the funeral expenses of the four victims of the deadly Kwa-Makhutha storm that struck at the weekend.

But a resident, Nzuzo Mzimela, said the four would not have been killed if they had had proper houses with solid infrastructure.

"The house where three Sithole family members died at KwaMakhutha was built of mud," Mzimela said.

"The house was totally destroyed, leaving only the muddy foundation for one to see that there was a house."

Mzimela said the politicians that had come to visit the area did not know that there were people living in the area of Nqunquma at KwaMakhutha.

Meanwhile, the spokesman for the department of social development, Mandla Ngema, said yesterday the victims would be buried in a joint funeral on Saturday, once the families had agreed.

"People are receiving food parcels and counselling," Ngema said.

High-profile politicians and administrators are expected to attend the funeral.
