South Africa heralds World Aids Day with other nations today on a positive footing compared with previous years.

This time around there is less adversarialism and tension than in the past.

This is partly due to the nifty footwork of the government, which saw communication lines around Aids initiatives being commandeered by then Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka rather than then embattled Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang last year.

UNAids shows SA has the highest number of people accessing ARV's in the world and the percentage of women on treament to prevent them passing the virus to their unborn children increased from 15% to 60% last year.
