Boxing SA shows heart

Boxing SA bent over backwards and sanctioned a 20-round tournament at Nashua's offices in Woodmead on Wednesday.

The five fights were over four-rounds each.

Boxing's governing body usually requires 38 rounds for a tournament to be sanctioned.

But it allowed the tournament to go ahead because promoter Rodney Berman, fighting legend Brian Mitchell and Jeff Ellis, a matchmaker and publisher, organised it to raise funds for ailing boxing personality Trevor Kooning.

"We will always bend over backwards for as long as a tournament is organised for charity," said Loyiso Mtya.

Sports memorabilia was auctioned and R250000 was raised for Kooning who is recovering after a double bypass and lung implant.

Kooning, 60, used to make boxing T-shirts, ring mats and corner cushions for 30 years. "Thanks to all behind this," Kooning said.
