Maritzburg United pulled off an inspired display when they beat pre-season relegation candidates Bay United 2-1 in an Absa Premiership match at Woodburn Stadium in Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

It was United's fourth win in 11 matches and it was well received by their supporters after the Team of Choice suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of Santos in their last league match.

Tony Tsabedze put United in the lead with a left-footed shot after a great pass from Peter Petersen in the 51st minute.

Abayomi Adebayo levelled matters when he struck six minutes later.

United got their winner through Brice Aka in the 59th minute, thanks to a good pass from Lynch Pule.

But it was not all smiles for football lovers in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday after Thanda Royal Zulu suffered a 0-1 defeat against Santos at Mpumalanga Stadium in Hammersdale.

Graham King scored the goal with a left-footed shot from in the box in the fifth minute.

King received a pass from Eleazar Rodgers and the 23-year-old made no mistake when he beat goalie Aubrey Mathibe.

Amabhubesi last won a match on November 12 when they beat upstarts Bay United 2-1 in Port Elizabeth.

The home side were unlucky not to level the score after Felix Obada's attempt from close range went wide in the eighth minute.

They continued to surge forward but Obada was unlucky again when he missed the target after a header was flicked on by veteran forward Peter Ndlovu in the 16th minute.

The People's Team were unlucky not to have gone into break leading 2-0 after Erwin Isaacs' shot from a free-kick was saved by Mothibe in the 38th minute.
