Referees and assistant referees from 14 countries on the African continent are taking part in a Cosafa regional course that started on Monday in Johannesburg.

The course, that is sponsored by Fifa for the first time, is for the newly appointed referees that will form the 2009 Fifa panel of referees.

It will be conducted by Felix Tangawarima, a Fifa instructor from Zimbabwe, Carlos Hendriques of South Africa and CAF instructor Chileshe Mukuka of Zambia.

The course is taking place ahead of the start of the yearly regional Metropolitan Cosafa Youth Championship in Kimberley on Friday.

The newly capped referees will be put through their paces both in the classroom and on the field over an intensive three-day period culminating in fitness tests.

At the end of the course, the participants will travel down to Kimberley to officiate at the Cosafa Youth Championship. All participants will be presented with certificates.
