A 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the gruesome murder of a 15-year-old high school pupil whose body was found with 66 stab wounds in Mpumalanga last Friday.

Hlengani Robert Shirinda of the neighbouring Nkovane village appeared in the Malamulele magistrate's court yesterday after he confessed to the murder of Nsovo Sambo. He was not asked to plead.

After magistrate Busi Nkosi read him his rights Shirinda said he would conduct his own defence.

The case was postponed to December 15 and Shirinda was remanded in custody.

Police spokesman Inspector Alson Mapindani said Shirinda allegedly confronted the girl while she was with her boyfriend near the bushes at Greenfarm village.

"He allegedly threatened them with a knife and chased the boyfriend away.

"He allegedly grabbed the girl and raped her before stabbing her 66 times," Mapindani said.

The police allegedly found her blood-stained clothes at his home after a tip-off from members of the public.

They also found the dead girl's pair of jeans.

Mapindani said Shirinda was cooperating with the police. Meanwhile, residents of Madonsi near, Malamulele cannot come to terms with the murder.
