The disaster management unit in the Greater Tzaneen municipality has started to provide relief for the more than 500 households whose properties were destroyed by storms last weekend.
The families were given tents, blankets and food parcels.
Municipal spokesman Odas Ngobeni said the affected families were living in Musiphani, Mavele, Babanana, Rikhotso, Xihoko and Maweni.
About 61 people were injured when their houses collapsed after the storm.
The victims were treated at Letaba and Van Velden hospitals in Tzaneen.
The storm also destroyed the roof of a block of four classrooms at Mahlebezulu Primary School in Babanana village.
Ngobeni yesterday appealed to businesses and unaffected community members in the Tzaneen area to join hands with the municipality in assisting the families.
