PSL helps popularise World Cup

The Local Organising Committee has asked the Premier Soccer League to help conscientise South Africans about the 2009 Confederations Cup and 2010 World Cup.

The Local Organising Committee has asked the Premier Soccer League to help conscientise South Africans about the 2009 Confederations Cup and 2010 World Cup.

This was confirmed by Kjetil Siem, chief executive of the PSL, who added they were determined to help the LOC make a success of the two global competitions.

Siem, a former sports journalist, said the PSL would use their league and cup competitions to educate the supporters about the Confederations Cup and World Cup.

"I've always believed that the PSL had a huge role to play in ensuring the success of this truly global showpiece.

"The fact that playing football on an almost daily basis is our core business is the perfect tool to educate fans and ourselves about various issues pertaining to these events," Siem said.

"We are extremely glad that the LOC has approached us and will do everything in our power to assist them to ensure the Confederations Cup and World Cup are a resounding success.

"I can confidently say that the number of spectators attending our PSL matches, whether it's league or cup games, is increasing, which is great as the message will get across to more people."
