Five-a-side a prelude to Soccerex

The festivities leading up to the 2008 Soccerex begin at Mandela Square in Sandton on Friday with a development tournament featuring Gauteng clubs.

The Diski-5 five-a-side soccer tournament caters for Under-17 boys and Open girls from the five Safa regions in the province.

Participating boy teams are Newcastle (Safa Tshwane), Scheepers (West Rand), Gunners (Johannesburg), Madagascar (Sedibeng) and Sanders United (Ekurhuleni).

The women's teams are Golden Girls (Safa Johannesburg), Parma Ladies (West Rand), Halleluya Young Angels (Tshwane), Luso Africa (Ekurhuleni) and VUT Girls (Sedibeng).

Soccerex, which the Gauteng provincial government is using to showcase its readiness for the 2009 Confederations Cup and 2010 World Cup, will start on Monday.

The soccer exhibition will be attended by the who's who of sport and related business across the globe. Avusa Media, owners of Sowetan, are partners.

Barbara Creecy, Gauteng MEC for sports, recreation, arts and culture said: "The chance to strive for soccer success on the internationally renowned Mandela Square in Sandton is certain to take the motivation and skills levels of the players to even greater heights."
