Building a special future

Building a Future is a particularly apt name for an ambitious youth development programme.

It is run by an energetic community worker at De Beers Heights in Barkley West, Northern Cape.

She is Irene Fitzi, one of the top three finalists in the adult category of the 2008 Old Mutual, SABC and Sowetan Community Builder of the Year Award.

Building a Future caters for children from six to 12, known as the Action Team, and youth between 12 and 35, known as Rising Stars.

It gives poor and vulnerable charges the will to succeed against all odds.

Interestingly the action in Action Team is an acronym for All Children are Treasures In Our Nation.

Fitzi, a former police officer, says the centre at an Assemblies of God church built and headed by her father, Reverend Frank George, is a beacon of hope

It encourages older youth's interest in education and health with the accent on HIV-Aids awareness, skills development and the dynamics of personal goal setting.

Plans are afoot to build a special centre, the Mzansi Youth Centre. Land has already been set aside for the purpose.

Building a Future's most commendable campaign is raising funds to pay for the education of its top achievers Frans Chobeng, Ricardo Kale, Marlin Solomon and Danny Bloem, who are studying at tertiary level.

l Catch Wild Unlimited star presenter Michelle Garforth's informative profile of Fitzi and her charges on SABC2 on Friday evening, just before the Sesotho news bulletin.

Inserts on the two other adult category finalists, Stembeni Vaughan-Williams and Simone Aronje will be screened on Saturday and on Sunday respectively.

Muvhango star Dingaan Mokebe profiles youth category finalists Matome Rakgoale, Sedrico Husselman and Bongani Diko on November 24, 25 and 26 respectively.

Hillside actor Patrick Shai profiles senior category finalists Edna Gazu, Elizabeth Nkoenyane and Mary Mhlanga on November 27, 28 and 29 respectively.

Ntokozo Mbuli of 50/50 profiles group section finalists John Nxumalo, Caroline Mogoane and Jonathan Schrire's work that will be screened on November 30, December 1 and 2.
