Seven alleged car hijackers, arrested at the weekend after being caught with a hijacked car, will remain in custody until other crimes against them are verified.
The gang was arrested at a tavern outside Polokwane on Sunday night.
They had allegedly hijacked a man in a bakkie the previous night.
They drove him around at gunpoint until one of them needed to go to the toilet.
According to Polokwane police spokesman Captain Mohlaka Mashiane, the victim managed to escape while the man was relieving himself. He went to the police, who dispatched a team to investigate.
"We found the men at a tavern," Mashiane said.
One man was shot when he tried to escape. He is in hospital, Mashiane said.
