The newly elected City of Johannesburg Sports Council's executive committee plans to meet various stakeholders to discuss their programme of action.

Led by prominent sports administrator, James "Maradona" Shabangu, the committee was elected in Braamfontein last weekend.

"It's a great honour to be elected leader of a team of administrators who are passionate about sport," said Shabangu.

"The team wants to see almost every young boy and girl in our residential areas participating in sport.

"We plan to visit schools in the city to ensure that our programme of mass participation reaches every body.

"The support we are getting from MEC for sport, arts, culture and recreation, Barbara Creecy, and City of Johannesburg is highly appreciated.

"It is good that MEC Creecy's department is also assisting our sports councils to set up proper structures to run their affairs in a more professional way.

"Gone are the days where some of our sport administrators used to run their affairs from the boot of their cars. Clubs must have offices with equipment.

"There will be workshops in various regions on event management, marketing, communication and finance control."

Shabangu said they would also engage the South African Soccer Legends to assist them on their projects to develop the beautiful game.

"We are happy that the South African Football Association and Premier Soccer League are co-opting some of our committee members into their sub committees.

"The soccer legends are doing a great job by adopting schools in their areas as part of the 2010 World Cup legacy projects.

"It will be great to see legends in athletics, netball, boxing and other sporting disciplines also helping out with the development of talent in their areas with a particular focus on schools."
