Former Olympics marathon champion Josia Thugwane and Mathews Temane will dust their shoes off to compete in the West Rand Mampudi Says Community Challenge in Mohlakeng on November 29.
The aim of this 15km race is to raise awareness against crime, which the organisers believe is escalating in the area.
Organiser Daniel "Mampudi" Radebe, said they will also use the event to highlight the danger of drugs and alcohol among the youth on the West Rand.
"We have noted with concern how our children abuse drugs and alcohol. There is no doubt this leads to crime," said Radebe yesterday.
The former marathon champion said the race was fully backed by West Rand district municipality mayor Faith Matshikiza.
"The mayor gave us more than R20 000, part of which will be prize money. Josia, Lawrence Peu, Temane and Johannes Maremane honoured this event when we launched it last year.
"It is good to have such big names on the programme as many people respect them and hopefully will listen to them. They are role models to many youngsters.
"We're encouraged that they have agreed to take part and we are grateful to the police for their assistance. I urge parents to allow their children to attend the challenge," Radebe said.
The main race starts at 8am and there will also be a 5km and 2km events.
Thugwane is the director of Bokamoso Bja Ramabilo Sports Foundation formed last year to promote athletics in the area.
