The ANC Youth League has thrown down the gauntlet at the its mother body, saying the ruling party will not order it around.

"The ANC does not instruct us nor does it order us to do or not to do anything," ANCYL spokesman Floyd Shivambu said yesterday.

Shibambo was reacting to a promise by ANC president Jacob Zuma to reign in ANCYL president Julius Malema, who is prone to controversial utterances.

Zuma's promise comes after an attack on Congress of the People (Cope) leader Mbhazima Shilowa, who Malema labelled as "an irresponsible father and security guard".

Shilowa's son from his previous marriage, Nhlamulo, successfully sued his father for maintenance in January this year.

Shilowa had denied paternity, but DNA tests proved him wrong and he was ordered to pay for Nhlamulo's education.

"The ANC can only advise the league.

"It is a fact that Mbhazima Shilowa is an irresponsible parent and his profession is that of security guard", said Malema.

Addressing students at the University of Limpopo on Friday, Malema also called on ANC supporters to make the campus a "no-go area" for Cope.

"You must also refuse to be contaminated by members of the party," he said.

"You must declare the institution a no-go area for these shenanigans."

Last week, Malema told Northern Cape Premier Dipuo Peters at a meeting of ANC volunteers in Kimberley that if she (Peters) wanted to go, she was welcome to do so.

Malema's public outbursts came under the spotlight after he said during a public address last year that the ANCYL was "prepared to kill for Zuma".

Earlier this year, when then ANC deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe came out against attacks on the Constitutional Court by ANC members, Malema came out to say Motlanthe was acting like "a paragon ofcorrectness".

Malema has also attacked Social Development Minister Zola Skweyiya, one of the ANC's elders.

This was after the minister had labelled him a disrespectful party member, for his public ranting about former president Thabo Mbeki shortly before the ANC had recalled Mbeki.

Malema said Skweyiya was "too old", with more than 52 years in the ANC's ranks.

He said if Skweyiya was genuine, "he should make such utterances within ANCYL ranks as the league is not the second branch of the ANC".

Yesterday, ANC spokesman Carl Niehaus said his party would first investigate the utterances Malema was said to have made before taking any action.
