Waiters in court for credit card fraud

Three waiters appeared in the Nelspruit magistrate's court yesterday after allegedly using a stolen credit card to defraud their employer of R1700, Mpumalanga police said.

Three waiters appeared in the Nelspruit magistrate's court yesterday after allegedly using a stolen credit card to defraud their employer of R1700, Mpumalanga police said.

"Derick Madlophe Edwin Ndlovu and Zanele Masuku were not asked to plead and their case was postponed to December 17. They were given R1000 bail each," said spokesman Leonard Hlathi.

All three, employed at a Spur restaurant in the Riversdale Mall, were arrested on Wednesday after their manager suspected foul play when he was given receipts instead of cash.

"When questioned the waiters said they only served customers with credit cards that day," Hlathi said.

The three allegedly used the stolen credit card to register payments and kept the cash received from customers, Hlathi said.

He said they swiped the card even when there were no customers in the restaurant.

"The manager became suspicious when he realised that only one credit card was used for all the transactions. He called the police. The card was reported stolen in October," Hlathi said.

A video camera was used to detect the crime on Wednesday, he said. - Sapa
