A Mpumalanga school principal has been honoured for her contribution to education.

Thandi Morupane, a principal at Clau-Clau Primary School in Nelspruit, came second at the national teaching awards after obtaining second position at the provincial awards in August.

Bruce Damons of Sapphire Road Primary in the Eastern Cape took first place.

Morupane was nominated in the Excellence in Primary School Leadership category.

In her quest to improve the lives of her pupils, Morupane managed to get donations for 278 poor and orphaned pupils who could not afford school uniforms.

The donation provided each pupil with a track suit, a school shirt, a pair of socks, shoes and underwear.

She also pleaded with private companies for food parcels and groceries that orphaned pupils could take home.

She also got $50 000 (about R520 000) from Beta KLM airline for the construction of an orphanage centre.

There is also a reading and eating bay under construction as pupils have to eat while squatting during break.

"Education is not about one person.

"It's important to help others when one has the power to do so," Morupane said.
