Proteas lose to Jamaica

Linda Moreotsene

The South African national netball team's tour of Jamaica got off to a sour start, as they fell 38-53 to the hosts on Tuesday.

The world's third ranked team outmuscled the Proteas in the tri-nations tournament at the National Indoor Stadium in Kingston, and showed just how far our girls still have to go before they are world beaters again.

The South Africans were scheduled to play Trinidad and Tobago last night and needed to win to qualify for today's final against Jamaica.

The result would have been a sobering one for coach Carin Strauss, especially after South Africa's comprehensive wins against Barbados, who are ranked 11 in the world, in Cape Town.

Strauss had said her goal for the tournament was to improve South Africa's ranking.
