Leaders in a real tizzy

The dismissal of five mayors last week has heightened fears and uncertainty among MECs, mayors and councillors who are supporters of former president Thabo Mbeki, below, and ex-premier Sello Moloto.

ANC sources confirmed that the fired mayors were the first of a group of 10 that would be shown the door.

The source said the mayors were being fired because their municipalities are not working and their relationships with the ANC are shaky.

The mayors who were kicked out are Angie Ramepadi of the Giyani municipality, Glory Mashaba of Makhado, Tebogo Mohapi of Modimolle, Mary Maphanga of Marble Hall and Refilwe Kubjana of Blouberg.

They will be replaced by Doris Mathebula, Mavhungu Lerule, Garita Lekalakala, Ivonne Makola and Segolwane Seriti.

ANC spokesman Ishmael Kgetjepe said the ANC needed a new crop of leaders equipped with a fresh mentality and a full understanding of how local government works.

Kgetjepe described as nonsensical allegations that the mayors' dismissal was a politically motivated purge influenced by the outcome of the Polokwane and Vhembe conferences.

He said the ANC had assessed the work done by the mayors and felt it was time for a new crop of mayors with skills to come in and demonstrate their abilities.

Kgetjepe said there were other mayors who were known Mbeki supporters who were not dismissed.

"It is untrue that they were dismissed because they did not support a particular political belief," he said.
