National flags will fly at half mast from today until Miriam Makeba is buried, according to a statement issued yesterday by President Kgalema Motlanthe.
"All national flags at provincial and national level will be flown at half mast from today until her funeral and cremation," he said.
He also said that the government had decided to open books of condolences for the public so they could record their affection and memories of the global icon and goodwill ambassador.
Motlanthe said the books would be open from today at the Union Buildings in Pretoria and at Tuynhuys in Cape Town.
Meanwhile, Makeba's grandson, Lindelani , cut a picture of grief yesterday as he put his head on his grandmother's coffin.
The 13-year-old brought tears to everyone's eyes as he recounted how fortunate he felt to have been born into the Makeba household.
Lindelani said Makeba was "a mother, father and my granny. It pains my heart to know that I now have to face the world without her."
His grandmother's body had arrived earlier from Italy where she died on Sunday night shortly after performing at a concert there. It was accompanied by another grandson, Nelson Lee.
