WP gets new, tough liquor law

SABMiller and Makro bosses in Western Cape could be fined up to R500000 or given a jail sentence of more than two years if they continue selling alcohol to unlicensed taverns - or to licensed taverns that they know are supplying illegal shebeens.

SABMiller and Makro bosses in Western Cape could be fined up to R500000 or given a jail sentence of more than two years if they continue selling alcohol to unlicensed taverns - or to licensed taverns that they know are supplying illegal shebeens.

This follows the passing of the Western Cape Liquor Bill by the provincial legislature yesterday.

The bill, which is the only one of its kind in the country, aims to clamp down on unlicensed taverns by cutting off their liquor supply at the source.

The law, which comes into effect next year, could also see liquor companies who transgress it forfeiting their assets.

The new law has been 10 years in the making. - Anna Majavu
