The SA Music Promoters Association yesterday also paid tribute to Miriam Makeba.

Leonard Sithole of Drankensberg Promotions told Sowetan that Makeba was instrumental in establishing the Tribute to South African Heroes Jazz Concert, which is now an annual event.

"Makeba, Jonas Gwangwa, Abdullah Ibrahim and Hugh Masekela came up with the idea," Sithole said.

"We started with Makeba in 1998 at a festival at Orlando Stadium. More than that, Makeba was a mother to them."

Morris Roda said: "I worked with Mazi for many years. I am deeply hurt."

Roda said Makeba had done a lot for the country but never got the recognition she deserved.

"Mazi founded a centre in Midrand. It is not getting the support it deserves," Rhoda said.

Promoter Peter Tladi said: "Makeba was a woman of many talents. Many knew her as a singer but she also loved cooking. She was also a clothing designer."
