Land issue puzzle for the state

The Department of Land Affairs is undecided on whether to extend its deadline for the redistribution of 30 percent of all white-owned land by another 14 years.

The Department of Land Affairs is undecided on whether to extend its deadline for the redistribution of 30 percent of all white-owned land by another 14 years.

Yesterday, Land Affairs director-general Thozi Gwanya told Parliament's joint budget committee that the department either needed an improved plan to redistribute the target land by 2014, or a "new approach towards 2025".

"Choices have to be made between the current scenario and the 2025 scenario, or an increase in the budget allocation to meet the target by 2014," said Gwanya.

He said 19,8 million hectares of land would need to be redistributed by 2014 for the government to meet its target. - Anna Majavu
