In trying to take the South African film industry to the next level, a Gauteng Film Indaba will be held today at the Sandton Convention Centre.

Concentrating on the theme, Beyond 2010, the one-day conference will look at many issues concerning the local film industry.

Among the people who will do presentations during the event is Nikolaus Eberl, who will outline opportunities and challenges for the industry, arising from the hosting of the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

Tumi Ntshingila, of the Gauteng Film Commission, said they would explore further the importance of 2010 for the film industry looking at lessons learnt from the German experience of hosting the 2006 Soccer World Cup.

She said other international guests included Jon Hendry and Lisa van Allen, who will share their experiences in building a globally competitive production centre in the US state of New Mexico, working with the state of New Mexico and the city of Santa Fe.

"In their presentation they will reflect on their experience in the crafting of state film incentive programmes as well as the roll-out of film technician training programmes. Van Allen will also expand on her experience in marketing the city of Santa Fe.

"Looking closer to home, prominent industry leaders will give their views on the state of the local industry.

"The afternoon will involve six breakaway discussions addressing a number of pertinent themes and topics," said Ntshingila.

Evidence suggests that studio and other infrastructural capacity is extensive and current demand needs are adequately met.

People such as those in production, distribution and media, government officials, politicians, business, sponsors and those interested in pursuing opportunities in film are invited to attended.
