Police are investigating a possible counterfeit money manufacturing syndicate after a 39-year-old man was found with fake notes at a house in Soweto.

Police were led to the man by a 19-year-old girl and her boyfriend who were caught with R1500 in fake notes at a car show in Nasrec.

Inspector Lorraine van Emmerk said the couple had tried to buy goods from one of the vendors at the motor show using the fake money.

"The vendor noticed that there was something wrong with the money and rushed to the police stand to report it. The couple led the police to a man in Soweto who was found with R5000 in counterfeit notes. They were all arrested and charged with possession of counterfeit money," Van Emmerk said.

She said the police have opted not to reveal details of where in Soweto the man was found.

"We are still busy with our investigations. We cannot reveal details because we do not want to jeopardise our case," she said.

The fake money was allegedly in R100 and R200 notes.

"We have not had similar incidents at the show. We were very lucky to catch these two," she said.
