A skills development programme launched by the Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa (Necsa) at the beginning of the year to benefit young people from disadvantaged communities is bearing fruit.
Launched in January, the Nuclear Skills Development (NSD) has already benefited 130 students, most of whom are matriculants from poor communities.
Aspiring artisan Kgaotsang Mothibi, 18, from Mogwase in Rustenburg, said that before joining the programme she was just sitting at home with no money to further her education.
"I live with my mother and she is unemployed. With the stipend I receive now I contribute to maintaining my home," she said.
Mothibi said that she wanted to study metallurgy after matric but did not have any money.
"Though this is not my dream career I am happy here because I enjoy studying process engineering," she said.
Mothibi said young people should be open to other careers to avoid being involved in "negative things".
Opening the programme in Phelindaba on Friday, Department of Minerals and Energy Minister Buyelwa Sonjica said the myth about nuclear energy had to be confronted by educating people.
