Correctional Services said that “matters are under control” at Johannesburg’s Sun City Prison on Wed.
Several works by self-taught artists Sicelo Tshabalala and Derrick Pilusa were among those auctioned at the Vincent Tshabalala Education Trust fundraising gala in Johannesburg recently.
It is not known yet how much money was raised.
Launched in September 2004 at the Alexandra Technical College, coincidentally the same place where Tshabalala had heroically fought and died, the trust seeks to:
lAward full bursaries to the five top matriculants in Alexandra annually;
lSponsor two financially disadvantaged Grade 8 pupils to complete high school;
lSupport and enhance the culture of teaching and learning in Alexandra high schools;
lIdentify and support networking opportunities, collaboration and exposure for beneficiaries of the trust; and
lCreate and support a volunteer network to enable the trust's beneficiaries and other students to take part in community development initiatives.
Vincent "Toivo" Tshabalala was a pupil at Minerva High School in Alex in the early 80s. He was the local branch chairman of the Congress of South African Students and founding member of the Alexandra Youth Congress.
He later skipped the country and joined Mkhonto we Sizwe. In 1985, at the age of 20, he died in a skirmish with the police in Alexandra. - Victor Mecoamere
