One of the latest casualties is Sifiso Twala of Soweto who, after the loss of her ID, was declared a foreigner when she applied for new one.
This despite the fact that the lost ID was personally delivered to her at home by former director-general Barry Gilder in 2004.
With South Africans gearing up to vote in next year's general elections we wonder how many were able to register at the weekend because of the continuing bungles.
It is ironic that the department even pledged to immediately deliver IDs to recent applicants so they can register to vote.
We hope the minister will keep her promise.
