Jealousy eats at noble sport

Jealousy has turned some black boxing promoters into hypocrites.

Jealousy has turned some black boxing promoters into hypocrites.

They see nothing good done by other members of the boxing fraternity yet they are doing absolute nothing but whine.

A month ago Sowetan exposed Mike Motloung as broke. This is the man who declared his undying love for pugilism by claiming he would sponsor the national controlling body with R10,5 million over three years.

The cry babies' response, through this newspaper was that CEO of BSA Bongani Khumalo must hit the road for failing to check Motloung's credentials.

Others wanted to come to the Sowetan's offices to voice their disappointment. I stopped them but still gave them a hearing.

Some later distanced themselves from their own story. Then came the National Promoters Association's annual general meeting in East London where these hypocrites voted in Blacky Seoe as an additional member.

This is the man they called a fly-by-night. Clearly his donation of R50000 cleared whatever doubts they had.

These men labelled the unions of Branco Milenkovic and Jake Matlala, as well as that between Dingaan Thobela and Knockout Promotion as BEE moves to acquire sponsors.

The same promoters complained to me asking how could BSA grant trainer-managers PJ de Lange and Manny Fernandez promoters' licences. But nobody has said anything about Mzimase Mnguni and S'Phatho Handi who both manage and promote fights.

Some complained about Loyiso Mtya's invitation to Nevada by promoter Branco Milekovic for Moruti Mthalane's fight there where Mtya was seen on TV carrying the South African flag. Mtya is employed by BSA as its director of operations. He is not a board member therefore there was nothing sinister in him being Milenkovic's guest.

The point is boxing in Mzansi will not prosper for as long as this bunch of hypocrites exists.

I take my leave.
