The relationship between trainers Gert Strydom and Manny Fernandez is over.

The two mentors have honed the skills of fighters for 10 years at the BRD gym at Wembley Arena, in the south of Johannesburg where Fernandez is based.

Some of the boxers they guided to stardom include Simon Ramoni, Isaac Hlatshwayo, Oscar Chauke and Malcolm Klassen.

Strydom was alone in the corner when Klassen won the IBF junior lightweight belt from Australian Gary St Clair on November 4 2006. Fernandez was in the US with Hlatswayo who was defeated by Kendal Holt.

Fernandez has been evasive about their separation, but Strydom confirmed that their partnership ended yesterday. He is using the gym of Soon Moorcroft at Danie van Zyl Recreation Centre in Newlands.

"I 've decided to move on. It was no longer a pleasure going in that gym. The vibes is no longer the same. Boxing is my passion and I want to do it with love. That was no longer the case there," he said, adding that he was never credited for all the good work he did with Fernandez who was showered with praise.

"I cannot be a cleaner the rest of my life. I have 65 aspirant fighters in my gym."
