The sale of ivory by the government to Chinese and Japanese buyers for R65,9 million has sparked an outcry among animal lovers.

Roughly 47 metric tons of stockpiled ivory was auctioned in Pretoria yesterday to 12 Chinese and 22 Japanese bidders.

Christina Pretorius, of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, said: "It doesn't make sense. In Asia, the wholesale price for ivory is $850, but we sold it at $142 (per kilogram), a fraction of the international price."
